No, I didn't find this old photograph in a box in my grandfather's attic. I was digging through some images taken during my early days of photography. When I first got into it I did a lot of practice shooting. I shot anything and everything and always had a camera with me. The camera in question was a point and shoot Sony MVC-CD350 with 2 or 3 megapixels.

This phone booth was in a little Gold Rush town called Mokelumne...way out in the California foothills. I was never very happy with anything I shot back in the day but, that's why I was practicing. Practice makes perfect (well, nearly perfect). I decided to go back and look the old images over. I still hate them, but with a little Photoshop fun, they can be really cool.

How to Dress for Family Photos

1. Coordinate outfits. Everybody in the portrait should wear items that complement each other in style and color. It is not necessary for all clothes to match, but they must make sense together. If grandpa wears a suit and tie and grandma wears shorts and a t-shirt, the portrait may look unbalanced and poorly planned.

2. Pick clothes appropriate to the portrait's setting. An outdoor portrait with a backdrop of fall leaves lends itself to casual clothing like khakis and crisp white shirts, or jeans and sweaters. A studio portrait with a plain colored background lends itself more to formal or semi-formal attire.

3. Stick to solids and subtle patterns. Bold stripes, large designs and polka dots stand out and tend to draw attention from the portrait's subject. An eclectic mix of patterns can clash and reduce the quality of a portrait.

4. Dress in timeless clothing for your family portrait. Let your age, rather than the clothes you wear, date the portrait.

5. Have appropriate shoes and socks. Many family portraits are full-body shots, so if you wear sneakers with your dress, you'll probably feel silly. If you plan to change clothes, bring shoes and socks to go with each outfit.

6. Wear colors that translate well through photography. Dark colors like navy blue, black and earth tones look especially nice outdoors. White clothing can get lost against a white background, and dark clothing against a pastel provides nice contrast. Bright shades of yellow, orange, red and pink can alter skin tones and are not ideal for photographs.

7. Clean and iron all clothing before the portrait. If your clothes wrinkle easily, change just before the sitting. Bring wrinkle release spry and a detergent pen to the portrait site for last-minute emergencies.

Monday Morning Macro...or not

It's Monday AGAIN and I have failed, yet again, in my posting of a macro. Last Monday was a fail because I was on the road the weekend prior. I could say that I was so preoccupied with family that I didn't have the time to shoot anything but that would be a lie. That would be a great big, fat lie. I have to admit that I spent most of last week partying and visiting with family and friends and the camera fell by the wayside. Truthfully, I was more concerned with not putting my wine glass down, or my cider bottle, or my margarita, and that sentence could keep going and going.

It takes two hands to hold a DSLR and I had an awesome grip on a bottle last week. I have no shame. So, all I can say on this Monday Morning (Macro) is...

I was rather unhappy with my "Studio Practice" shots as far as lighting. I did like the effect given off by the the natural lighting coming in through the bamboo blinds, but the filter was just too soft for my taste. So, I stripped off the filter and voila! Much better!

I'm not so great with indoor shooting and with the weather turning cold, I took this opportunity to work on my weak point. Thankfully, I have gorgeous subjects at my beck and call. I like the dreamy effect given by the natural lighting coming in through the bamboo blinds. I love natural lighting and I really need to learn to work without it. I'll have to find another area to set up the backdrop, preferably, away from a large window. One more thing, I'm thinking the filter is too soft, shall we try without it? I am doing my first infant shoot tomorrow with the lights and backdrop. Practice! Practice!

Not the most exciting macro but I was strapped for time. Monday comes quickly even though I try to keep it at bay for as long as I can. I had just prepared a finger bowl of pomegranate seeds so I figured I'd snap it. Then, I ate it.

Fun with a Fisheye

So I was rummaging through the garage one day when I came across an old leather camera case apparently from the 60s or 70s. In it, I found an old movie camera and a huge fisheye lens. I was thrilled with my find. I took that old fisheye out for a drive today. I used three adapter rings (42-46, 46-52 and a 52-58mm) just to get it on to my SLR. It was funny to look at but it seemed to work.

Don't Underestimate Your Point and Shoot

In the last few weeks, I've been asked numerous times about the camera I shoot with and, usually, someone will exclaim "I've gotta get one of those!". DSLR cameras can be quite pricey and with the economy the way it is, I don't wish to inspire anyone to feel they need to spend a few thousand on a new camera when they have a perfectly good point and shoot at home. So, I dug back through five years of discs to find pictures taken using three different point and shoot cameras. The moral of the story? It's not the camera, it's how you use it. Embrace your point and shoot!
